About Katja

As a ceramist I design both functional and artistic creations, although the boundary between the two sometimes fades.

I think in porcelain…

My functional work consists on the one hand of handmade creations and on the other hand of industrially executed works.

Under “K!-design by Katja Van Breedam” I design the handmade collection from my own needs or tailor-made for a customer. I design the functional range that is created in collaboration with manufacturers from Katja Van Breedam. My artistic works also come under my own name.

About my technique

While my earlier method was based on liquid porcelain castings (bone china), now a slower technique is central, requiring few tools and good technical skill.

The base consists of porcelain sausages, which are squeezed in different directions to create all kinds of characters. Either upwards (pinching), which gives the creation a vibrating appearance due to the slightly visible fingerprints, or sausages on top of each other (coiling) where work traces remain clearly present. This process hardly allows for corrections and therefore radiates fragility. A technique that is constantly in motion, but comes to a standstill in the creation itself.

Creations with a soul

The fingerprints and work marks give every creation a soul. It shows transparency, fairness and imperfections, which make the result unique.

But this evolution in working method does not rule out designing with bone china. On the contrary, it still remains an important part of my current story. It is a game between emotion, coincidence and intuition, based on the language of porcelain to move everyone.
